STOP SNACKING!
Snacking - it's a habit that sneaks up on even the most disciplined among us. Recently, during a routine check-in with one of my clients, a familiar scenario unfolded. The conversation started casually with, "How's it going?" focusing on her training and nutrition. After some initial hesitation, she admitted that while her workouts were on track, her diet was merely in the 'trying' phase. This is where the real conversation began.
Recognizing the Snacking Habit
She confessed to snacking between meals, a common trap many fall into. My response was as direct as they come: "STOP IT!" It sounds simple, doesn't it? Yet, we all know stopping an ingrained habit is easier said than done. But what if it's not as complicated as we think? What if the power to change is already within us?
Beyond 'Trying'
Saying you'll "try" to change a behavior often implies uncertainty. It's as if success and failure hold equal ground, and effort alone is satisfactory. While 'trying' is commendable in learning new skills or pushing physical boundaries, when it comes to snacking, the situation is different.
No Middle Ground with Snacks
There's no intricate skill involved in not reaching for snacks between meals, no grand summit to conquer. It's a straightforward decision: you either snack, or you don't. For those accustomed to snacking, the key lies in a firm and simple 'STOP IT!' Acknowledging that behavior change is within your control is the first significant step.
Taking the First Step
Changing your behavior starts with a mindset shift. It's about being conscious of your actions and recognizing the moments when you're likely to snack. Are you really hungry, or is it just a habit? Sometimes, a glass of water, a short walk, or a different activity can distract you from the urge to snack.
Creating a Supportive Environment
To make this journey easier, consider rearranging your environment. Keep healthier alternatives within reach and make the less healthy snacks less accessible. It's about setting yourself up for success, making the right choice the easy choice.
Embracing the Challenge
Remember, while stopping a habit like snacking might seem daunting at first, it's an empowering step towards taking control of your health. Each time you resist the urge to snack unnecessarily, you're reinforcing a healthier habit and getting closer to your nutrition goals.
You have the strength to overcome the snacking habit. It's about making conscious choices and realizing that sometimes, the simplest advice can be the most effective.
Hope that helps!
